Anna Fascitelli Wellness & Recreation Center
Kingston, RI
University of Rhode Island
The Anna Fascitelli Wellness Center at the heart of the University of Rhode Island’s campus exemplifies how a mid-century modern building can be reimagined through thoughtful preservation and intervention. The original Dining Commons, designed by Pietro Belluschi and winner of the 1965 Progressive Architecture, has been transformed by S3 Design and Kite Architects into a vibrant, light-filled fitness hub.
The design drew inspiration from the building’s original cantilevered volumes, introducing a glass entry that replaces the former loading dock with a welcoming campus-facing façade. The interior was dramatically opened, creating transparency and projecting the energy of the fitness program outward. Key upgrades included optimizing program flow, enhancing the building envelope, and replacing HVAC and power systems for energy efficiency and indoor health. Insulated window systems and terracotta rainscreen panels complement the restored original terracotta masonry, preserving the structure’s architectural heritage.
Designed for undergraduate students, the Wellness Center offers cardio and weight-training areas, group class studios, and expanded health and wellness services, providing a dynamic facility that reflects URI’s commitment to student well-being.
