S3 Design provided architectural design services to retrofit a warehouse for The Refinery health club in Atlanta that maintained the building’s industrial aesthetics. The Refinery prides itself on delivering highly certified trainers and state-of-the-art equipment, and specialized programs to bring out the best of its youth, adult, and senior members. S3 Design was tasked with creating a high-end user experience on par with The Refinery’s elite training program.

The project illustrates how thoughtful design can create a unique experience on a budget. The spatial experience at The Refinery embodies the training experience – the industrial metals and bold colors reflect the workout’s toughness. Simultaneously, elements of comfort and recovery are illustrated in the locker amenity and gathering spaces with warm wood materials and integrated technology that evoke a sense of luxury. Upon entry, a relaxed social gathering area with warm wood accenting the floor, wall, and ceiling provides a respite before entering the fitness area, where a transition to more industrial materials signals the workout’s seriousness. The program includes a reception area, lounge/coffee bar, turf agility area, 40-yard sprint track, Pilates studio, cardio area, BioCircuit training suite, locker rooms, functional training area, outdoor training
